The early model winches with the 2.5hp had a keyed shaft, so if you wish to update to the 4.6hp or commonly used 6hp motor, you will need to change this gear, which once you have the top hat off is very easy to do.

This is the splined input gear found on the input shaft from the motor to main drive gear on the WARN Hi mount 8274-50 winches.

To check if you need one, if thinking about upgrading, simply remove your winch motor, and check if the spline on the motor is keyed or splined, be careful not to knock the gear off when removing or installing the motor, as you will need to take the hat off to put it back in.
